Best Mexican Food in Midland?
I have all kinds of ideas for serious, thought-provoking, pithy posts. But, really, there's not much in life more important than good Tex-Mex, so those other things will wait. Plus, it's Janie's fault for bringing up Wall Street Bar and Grill.
Here's my list for where to find the best Tex-Mex/Mexican dishes in town. Feel free to try to convince me otherwise.
- Fajitas - Romie's
- Stacked Enchiladas - Abuelo's (especially with a fried egg on top)
- Asado - Dos Compadres
- Tortilla Soup - Jorge's (Big Spring & Loop 250; recipe is different at Midland Drive location)
- Tacos (plain) - Rosa's
- Tacos (exotic) - Casa Lopez (Soft Tacos Durango: beef, chorizo, avocado, fresh pico de gallo in soft corn tortillas)
- Nachos - Dos Compadres
- Seafood Enchiladas - Cancun Grill
- Huevos Rancheros - Wall Street Bar and Grill (I know, I know...but have you ever tried 'em?)
- Breakfast Burritos - Jumburrito (chorizo, huevos y queso con salsa verde)
- Chips & Salsa - Tie: On the Border & Abuelo's
- Brisket - Casa Lopez
- Chile Relleno (traditional) - Dos Compadres
- Chile Relleno (exotic) - Cancun Grill (shrimp and crab smothered with corn queso)
Notably missing from my list are nominations for best sopapillas, flan, menudo, rolled enchiladas, and non-breakfast burritos. It's about time you guys started pulling your weight around here!
Which one did we go to? I remember it as being yummy :).
Posted by: Rach at January 15, 2008 05:09 AMJanie, I won't disagree with your picks, other than to wonder what the point is regarding veggie fajitas. ;-)
We rarely order queso, so I had no opinion about that. Also, a burger is just something you eat to cleanse your palate in order to prepare for the next round of Tex-Mex.
Rachel, we ate at Abuelo's during your visit. As I recall, you ordered something really bland. ;-)
Posted by: Eric at January 15, 2008 06:54 AMI've just printed out a map to Dos Compadres because I love me a good traditional chile relleno. Sometime in the next couple of weeks, I'll be stopping in Midland to eat!
Posted by: Donna B. at January 15, 2008 08:57 AMThis is so unfair. We have so little good Mexican/TexMex and I crave it frequently. Oh to have the luxury of enough places around such that I could choose amongst them.
Lucky ducks.
Posted by: beth at January 15, 2008 11:34 AMDonna, I look forward to your report, to see if you concur with Janie and me.
Beth, you're right that we're blessed in this area, but just try finding a decent bagel and schmear around here! ;-)
Posted by: Eric at January 15, 2008 11:49 AMI am a creature of habit and usually eat the same thing when i go somewhere so i can only really give you my two cents on a couple:
Eric got the stacked enchilada right (there is no other way except with eggs on top)
He also got the plain taco (but wait for jack-in-the-box)
Janie got the tacos durango right
next time we go to romie's it is time to try their fajitas - and not veggie!
Years ago - and despite the fact that she herself doesn't even like 'em - MLW got me hooked on fish tacos while we were out in San Diego. I just love 'em!
And the only place I know to get 'em in the Permian Basin is On the Border. (Back when they were still afloat, Coyote Beach on Parkway in Odessa had incredible fish tacos!) But On the Border's service has progressively become just horrible, so we rarely go there.
If anybody else knows where else I can find me some fish tacos, please speak up!
Perhaps we need a similar list of the best Mexican food in Odessa?
Posted by: Rob O. at January 15, 2008 01:47 PMLyle, fajitas are the special on Wednesdays at Romie's – $5.99 a plate. We've got a standing date there (uh, except for this Wednesday). And, if I had put "Best Service" on the list, that would have gone to Romie's as well, especially in the evenings. Lunch is a madhouse.
Rob, I'm Vela Bay serves fish tacos, or at least they did in their former location. They moved across town to another spot a couple of months ago and we've not checked them out.
I know what you mean about OTB's service; it's the same here in Midland. Not that the service is so bad, but they don't have enough staff to open the entire restaurant at any given time, so you end up waiting for a table, while you gaze across a half-empty dining room. (Same for the Olive Garden, by the way.)

Posted by: robert lester at January 15, 2008 02:35 PMI agree, Robert (you might want to check into that sticking "return" key ;-); I've never had a bad meal there. Just because it doesn't get a "best of" for an individual entrée doesn't mean it's not a great place to eat.
Posted by: Eric at January 15, 2008 02:39 PMI was going to put the Jack in the Box tacos down...but I was afraid I'd get shot...
Posted by: Janie at January 15, 2008 03:27 PMI'm reserving judgment until I can try them out. More than a few people have commented on how good they are.
Posted by: Eric at January 15, 2008 03:31 PMI can't remember where you and YLB took me that time, but I thought that dinner was great. Of course, it had a lot to do with the company.
I saw On the Border in your list, which is a chain I guess since we have one out here. Their chips and salsa were very good, and their fish taco was excellent. I was impressed, and I'm not a big fan of chain restaurants.
Posted by: Jim at January 15, 2008 04:27 PMJim, we ate at Jorge's. And thanks for the kind words. ;-)
On the Border is owned by the company that owns Chili's and Macaroni Grills.
Posted by: Eric at January 15, 2008 09:29 PMWithout consulting my handy dandy trip record... I believe I ordered enchilada's :P. Not bad for a girl whose only ever tried tacos haha.
Posted by: Rach at January 16, 2008 04:40 AMChicken enchiladas, to be exact. I can't remember what I did yesterday, but I never forget food! ;-)
Posted by: Eric at January 16, 2008 06:29 AMFish tacos at Gerardo's. Good service, quality fare. Midland location only. Odessa store is closing.
Posted by: dj at January 16, 2008 08:59 AMWe used to frequent Gerardo's, um, frequently, but it somehow dropped off our normal gastronomic route. The Midland store does a good business, that's for sure.
Posted by: Eric at January 16, 2008 09:12 AMVery impressive Eric!
Posted by: Rach at January 17, 2008 04:37 AMOh you kids and your full fat diets!
The only time I eat Mexican food is when I'm so hungry my judgment goes out the window, which happen too often, by the way.
Hmmm. I think I'll print out your list for the next time that happens.

So it's my fault, huh? I notice you didn't pick on burgers, per my Fort Worth review!
So, let's see...
JANIE'S PICKS FOR TEX-MEX...
Fajitas - Casita Gerardo - especially veggie ones!
Stacked Enchiladas - I will agree with your Abuelo's (and most especially with a fried egg on top)
Asado - No, dude...Casita Gerardo
Tortilla Soup - I love...Casita Gerardo's tortilla soup
Tacos (plain) - Dos Compadres!!!
Tacos (exotic) - Casita Gerardo has the best Tacos Durango, in MLH's eyes (not to mention stomach!)
Nachos - Dos Compadres (I agree!)
Seafood Enchiladas - I've never had them, but watch me go to Cancun Grill now!
Huevos Rancheros - Wall Street Bar and Grill - they do rock. As to a TexMex restaurant, I love the ones at Jorge's on Midland Drive.
Breakfast Burritos - Jumburrito any type
Chips & Salsa - Tie: Carlos', in Big Spring!!! Second, Dos Compadres....homemade salsa, poured out of a pitcher into your salsa bowl
Brisket - Oh, yes, I agree - it's Casa Lopez
Chile Relleno (traditional) - I agree, Dos Compadres
Chile Relleno (exotic) - again, I've not done this one, but I will try it at Cancun Grill.
Veggie Quesadillas - Casita Gerardos - they are amazing!!!
and you forgot
Chile Con Queso - I love Jorge's...and, Abuelo's.
Just Plain Hot Salsa - Abuelos, for their "bravo" sauce...and they have a hotter one, but I can't remember the name...I think it gave me brain damage, it was so freakin' hot.
Okay, that was fun.
