Solid Gold Vinyl

My pal Mark is thinking about digitizing his extensive collection of Slim Whitman albums, but he's leaning toward leaving them on vinyl and buying a new turntable to replace the old and busted Radio Shack model he's nursed along since 1968.

He tells me he's just about decided on this model, which borrows technology from both the Mars Rover and The Terminator.

I can't decide if this is a joke. A hundred large for a 'table? Of course, that works out to just $130 per pound, which probably makes it a better buy than most of the alternatives. Plus, according to the shopping cart calculation, shipping by USPS is only $7.00. And, they take PayPal.

I say, go for it, Mark. And let us know how ol' Slim sounds when spun on bullet-proof wood.

Hey, didn't the Jetsons have that very same turntable?

When you named the price, I half expected to click the link and arrive at the Nieman-Marcus web site. The item may very well be – had better be – the very finest turntable technology known to man, but why bother? Sure, you need to have some kind of turntable on which to play Slim (or, in my case, my original, never-released-on-CD copy of Buckingham Nicks), but as I've recently learned when hooking up components to support my new HDTV, the sound that comes out is only as good as the source or the poorest-quality component in the system. Sure, the pops and clicks are endearing in a nostalgic sort of way, and the sound of a good analog pressing is ever so slightly warmer sounding; but most of my old vinyl can't hold a candle to my CDs, in terms of range. I find myself thinking, “Good grief, what did they have against bass, back then?” And then I remember that it had to do with the amount of space between the grooves and that there was a physical limit to how meaty a vinyl recording could be.

Or maybe I just don't have an expensive enough turntable.

P.S. - I bet Bret... er... the guy in the Rolls has two of those fancy turntables.

I am actually more concerned about about preserving the John Gary collection that I stumbled across at my folk's house the other day...I never knew...

Can you imagine the trickle down affect a purchase like this would cause? You sure couldn't plug this into the old Radio Shack reciever.

Does that thing make milkshakes too? Looks like it should easily replace any jukebox the old soda shops ever dreamed of but at that price it should dispense drinks too.
