Afternoon Reverie

Perhaps there's a more relaxing place to be than sitting on the front porch of one's new home, braced against the unnaturally cool breeze with a freshly-brewed cup of coffee, and listening to a slow rain soak the landscape, the smell of freshly-laid cedar mulch from the adjacent flowerbeds filling the air, which is itself filled with barn swallows playing the aerial equivalent of kick-the-can. I'm just at a loss to figure out where that place might be.

These are the times that make the spirit exhale a deep sigh of contentment.

Couldn't agree more. Although my version this afternoon involved the backyard scene, a couple of snickerdoodles and an ice cold glass of milk.

..to the simple things.

Mark, you brought up an excellent point, and the one thing that was missing from our afternoon: food, or to be more specific, chocolate.

It is hard to beat a good homemade snickerdoodle, though, especially the chewy kind.

Eric, Mark, it's hard to beat the simple joy of something as simple as rainfall. Though her poem eventually deals with other, weightier matters, I've always liked the images from the opening lines of Sarah Teasdale's poem .....

There will come soft rains and the smell of the ground,
And swallows circling with their shimmering sound;

And frogs in the pool singing at night,
And wild plum trees in tremulous white;

Robins will wear their feathery fire,
Whistling their whims on a low fence-wire;

We really did need this rain. It was way too short though.

Jeff, very appropriate poetry, although she should have worked grackles into the mix somewhere.

Damien, we don't want to get spoiled, do we? ;-)

The new home surely adds an excitement, the rain also. Rain always means renewal to me. This morning I have everything but the new home and the rain.

I'll be on the front porch if you need me :-)

Donna, never underestimate the value of a good front porch. ;-)

(There's really a whole post begging to be written about that subject. You want to do it, or shall I?)
