Midland Starbucks are safe

I finally got around to looking for the list of the 600 stores to be closed by Starbucks, and found it on the company's press room web page. It's in PDF format, dated July 18, and you can download it here.

The good news is that while one store in El Paso is being closed, as is another in Plainview, West Texas otherwise escapes the shutdowns. Roswell, NM, is losing one store, no doubt due to the recent drop-off in alien traffic. And on a more selfish note, my next favorite non-local store - the one just off I-20 in Eastland - is also staying in business.

Feel free to leave a comment with your take on why $B put the Utah stores in Texas. Personally, I blame Warren Jeffs.

Is $B an acceptable abbreviation for starbucks?

The only one i've seen is *$

shrug. Glad your expensive caffeine stores will still be open. And I LOLd at your comment on the Roswell store closing.

I have a rep for playing fast and loose with acronyms; it's just one of the many dangerous parts of my personality. I'm a rebel without a cause; a wild and untameable stallion; a lone crusader for truth and justice; an aficionado of the venti, double-caf, non-fat, wet cappuccino. And a couple of cute little vanilla bean scones on the side, please.

Man, Dallas is getting killed. A lot of my old standbys are going.

I wonder what all those moody baristas are going to do now?

I can't think of a single response that won't get me in trouble with someone.

Go for it Eric, you know you like trouble!

Shreveport is losing the one Starbucks within 10 miles of me and the one that employs one of my favorite neighbors, so I'm kinda bummed.

Well, I did say that I lived on the edge, didn' t I? Problem is, I still have to rely on some of those moody baristas for my regular fix, so I prefer to refer to them as eccentric caffeine artistes.

I'm surprised that in Shreveport, you have to drive 10 miles to find a store. That is a bummer, indeed.

i THINK they have starbucks in austin... i'm not really sure, because there are so many better local places.

sorry, just couldn't help it. :-)

That's OK. I've been to some of those local places and I completely agree with your assessment.

Of course, since you don't drink coffee, you're hardly the voice of authority in this conversation. ;-)

well, i've heard there are great local coffeehouses. :-)

There are only two on the list I can ever recall going to, one in Waco and one in East Syracuse, N.Y. -- the one in Waco is pretty much on the "death corner" for retailers, since there's no easy way in or out from Waco Drive or Vally Mills, even though its easily seen from both streets (which was true even going back to the 1960s, when I pestered my parents to stop at Burger Chef on the same site).

John, I hear you re: the Waco location. I don't know how the locals feel about it, but whenever I'm in town my goal is just to survive that intersection.

I would, however, mourn the loss of the Starbucks on the Baylor campus (although Common Grounds is more than a match for it if you don't mind the funky college vibe that Baylor students really aren't capable of pulling off).
