The Season's First Roundup

I don't know what the weather's like in your neck o'the woods, but here in Midland we've got 30+ mph winds out of the north, and you know what that means, don't you? Yep. Tumbleweeds.

I'm determined to stay ahead of the game this winter, trying to avoid a repeat of last spring's "Wall of 'Weeds" fiasco, so I'm periodically braving the elements* to grab the accumulating tumbleweeds from our front porch and release them back into the wild where they can run free. Said release involves carrying them into the middle of the street and letting the gusting wind do the rest, while hoping that they get far enough down the block to clear the neighbors' yards.

Some probably won't, but I don't feel too badly about that. This will be their first tumbleweed season in the neighborhood, and I wouldn't want them to feel like they've missed out on the quintessential West Texas suburban experience: weed wrangling.

Just doing my part to keep it real, you know?

*It's a losing battle, of course; they blow in faster than I can set 'em free.

Comments

If you set them free, they just blow off and sprout more tumbleweeds! Destroy them!

In southern Arizona my daughter and her husband filled a construction site dumpster with tumbleweeds growing in their yard.

From then on it was WAR. Poisons, hoes, plastic, gravel, and outright cruelty were waged against the tiniest little green thing that looked like it might grow up to be a tumbleweed.

Oh, believe me, we take no prisoners when it comes to the accursed things growing in the neighborhood. The ones we're dealing with today are carpetbaggers, possibly from the next county if not the next state.

And there aren't enough dumpsters in Midland to hold them.

Well, I can honestly say that today you are getting tumbled imports from Martin County. They just keep rollin, and rollin, and.........

Had a really big one almost hit my car this morning - I mean BIG - like wider than my car - yikes! They seem to be stronger this year - maybe due to lack of rain?!?

I guess although you're getting the Martin County onslaught - we are getting the ones from Howard County - rollin, rollin, rollin........

Cherie, are you seeing dollar bills blowing across those fields? ;-)

I remember that you and Bob were cogitating on some way of monetizing those infernal things by shipping them north to Yankees.

Friends of mine wanted tumble weeds for something the other day. I almost volunteered to fly over and pick some up for them!

Rachel, can you get here by Friday? They're forecasting another front, which means another "round-up," and you're welcome to take all of 'em you can pack. ;-)
